Wireless smartphone hookups for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a vertically mounted wireless charger, are now considered standard equipment. Thanks to the $5,655 Limited package, which is an optional purchase, you get leather upholstery on top of exceptionally supportive and comfy seats. You don’t have to get the Limited package, but you can if you want to. As a result, the seats in the all-electric Nissan Ariya are going up against some stiff competition in the mainstream market for best seats. Even if it’s not as crammed as a La-Z-Boy, you still feel like you’re sinking into the driver’s seat instead of sitting on top of it. This is so even if it isn’t quite as crammed. While the Platinum trim comes standard with adaptive dampers, the entry-level XLE model that was tested here rides on a conventional suspension. In spite of this, the ride is top-notch overall. Honest to goodness, it holds its own, if not outperforms, more costly equipment from names like Mercedes-Benz. It can soak up imperfections with ease and keep the Crown in a state of blissful peace at all times.

Engine and Performance

This model’s engine is less robust than the Platinum trim’s, which includes a high-output hybrid system that uses a turbocharged gas motor to help generate 340 horsepower. This midsize vehicle may rely on it to provide ample acceleration, which it more than delivers on. The hybrid system also includes an electrical component, however this is an extra. There is a small increase in power output compared to the Camry Hybrid, which uses a similar arrangement, because the combined output of the gas and electric engines is 236 horsepower. Although it produces a buzzing noise when the throttle is applied to a high degree, the engine never seems to lack the power that is demanded of it. The automated transmission known as a continuously variable gearbox (CVT) is more to blame for this.

Despite this, the noise level is not so high as to be considered unpolished. As far as fuel economy goes, the powertrain is tops with an official combined consumption rate of 5.7 liters per hundred kilometers. After driving 150 km with considerable variances, an average of 5.5 liters per hundred kilometers was found to be the result. No matter the trim level, every Toyota is equipped with a full suite of state-of-the-art safety systems. For a long time, this has been a modern-day tradition for Toyota. This vehicle also has an adaptive cruise control system, which helps with traffic management in both directions. The Limited package, an optional extra for the XLE trim level, has a self-parking technology that can operate in both parallel and perpendicular spots. It takes some getting used to the proactive driving aid system that automatically slows down the car when it senses another vehicle in front of it. It takes some time to adjust at first. Conversely, the technologies function just as designed. Think of it as adaptive cruise control with no set speed—which is great in some situations, but won’t stop the car entirely when traffic is slowing down, as at a red light—because of this. Long periods of time are required before the process of acclimatization or complete disengagement from the system may be deemed finished.

The Crown boasts all-wheel drive and a unique personality, but it’s more costly than the most expensive gas-electric Camry with the same hybrid powertrain and the 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid. With a starting price of $45,590, the Crown comes with a freight charge of $1,860, which cannot be negotiated. With the Limited package, the price of the sedan rises to $51,245, from $59,990 for the Platinum grade. And that’s before you add in the price of shipping and taxes.

Despite its not-so-cheap price tag, the 2023 Toyota Crown gives off the impression that it is well worth the investment. This car’s distinctive smoothness is the result of its unparalleled powerplant and its exceptionally soft suspension. Bringing the Crown back to this region would not be the most sensible choice, at least from a practical one. This is analogous to how a modern monarch would be completely bereft of common sense. But it’s an unabashedly luxurious midsize car that looks great doing it. Although it’s quite unlikely that Toyota will sell more than a handful of Crowns in Canada annually, the fact that each one is absolutely unique lends an aura of exclusivity to the vehicle, elevating its already impressive status as an excellent sedan.
