The Yaris’s infotainment system is designed to be user-friendly, with a console dial that allows control of the dashboard display. Because the driver’s focus isn’t as constantly taken from the road, it’s easier to use than touch-based systems. Three knobs and four electronic buttons make up the manual air conditioning controls on my top-of-the-line Toyota Yaris XLE test car. Fog lights, heated front seats, alloy wheels, and a heated steering wheel with leather trim were all included of my XLE test vehicle. Also, I swapped out the 16-inch wheels’ steel rims with alloy ones. The only model that comes with the manual transmission attachment is the base model. An automated six-speed gearbox is available as an upgrade at the XLE level but is not available at the base level.

Engine and Performance

Even though I know this isn’t really a fair criticism of a cheap car, the Yaris hatchback’s acceleration is one of its few weak points. Power and torque output by the 1.5-liter engine made by Mazda are identical to those of the previous generation Yaris (106 hp and 103 pound-feet, respectively). It appears that acceleration from a standstill is happening normally, as the little engine happily buzzes through the first three gear ratios of the gearbox. However, the Toyota Yaris loses power rapidly while traveling at highway speeds; driving this vehicle on two-lane highways while engaging in risky overtaking maneuvers is not a good idea.

My Toyota Yaris-iA tester got the same city rating from Natural Resources Canada as its average fuel usage after a week of city driving: 7.3 liters per hundred kilometers. Approximately 5.9 gallons per hundred kilometers when driven on a highway.

These improvements are in stark contrast to the prior version of the Yaris hatchback, which had worse fuel economy because of its very low-tech engine and dated four-speed transmission. The 2017 Yaris, Toyota’s entry-level vehicle, is now equipped with a low-speed forward collision detection and avoidance system instead of the full Safety Sense suite. The lack of automatic high-beams and lane-departure warning in the previous generation is disappointing, even though I think many Yaris buyers will like it, especially anxious or inexperienced drivers. An excellent illustration of Toyota’s efforts to enhance the affordability of their vehicles in relation to the quantity of features they offer is the Yaris. The base model of the new hatchback starts at $16,790, with an automatic transmission adding $1,200 to the price. My test vehicle, the XLE, was priced at $19,450. Although South Korean manufacturers Hyundai and Kia are often crowned champions of affordability, the mid-range Accent Preferred offers nearly identical features as the similarly priced Toyota Yaris XLE. The Kia Rio LX+ offers almost identical features for a few hundred dollars less; but, adding further extras will increase the price to well over twenty grand.While both the Yaris XLE and the Honda Fit have similar features, the Yaris XLE is around $1,000 cheaper. On the other hand, the $21,090 LX-Honda Sensing grade includes sophisticated driver aid systems that are unavailable on the Yaris XLE. If transportation value is your only criterion, two cars that might be good choices are the Chevrolet Spark and the Mitsubishi Mirage. Regardless, while offering less refinement overall, both of those versions wind up costing just a few hundred dollars less than the Yaris.
