When compared to its closest competitors, it outperforms them all with 187 horsepower, 190 torque, and 180 horsepower, respectively, from the Tucson, the CR-V, and the base engine of the Ford Escape (albeit the latter also comes with a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0L engine).

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) pegs the RAV4 EV’s fuel economy at 9.5 L/100 km city, 7.2 L/100 km highway, and 8.5 L/100 km combined. My results were significantly higher, coming in at 11.0 L/100 km, and I had it over a severely chilly week. With its standard engine, the Ford Escape achieves 8.4 L/100 km, the Honda CR-V 8.4, and the Hyundai Tucson 9.3 according to official ratings, so it’s not far off from its AWD rivals.

Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, and the rearview camera are all standard on all trim levels. Although it was more expensive than many competitors, my top-tier Limited model had a tonne of features for the money, costing $46,180.

Depending on the trim level, upgrading from a gas-only RAV4 to a gas-electric Limited costs an extra $1,600, but it could be money well spent due to the vehicle’s refined handling and excellent gas mileage.
